Achilles Tendon Injuries

The Achilles heel, often used as a metaphoric expression of a person’s weak spot, is one of the most painful injuries you can experience. But did you know that if you suffer the dreaded Achilles Tendon injury, there are a number of circumstances in which you could make a substantial compensation claim. Read on to find out more...

What is the Achilles Tendon?
The Achilles Tendon (sometimes referred to as Calaneal or the tendocalcaneous) connects the calf muscle and heel bone. The Achilles Tendon is the largest tendon in the body, big and thick in structure. It is most commonly injured while playing sport.

How do I know if I’ve suffered an Achilles Tendon injury?
Achilles Tendon injury symptoms differ depending on the severity of the injury. The main symptoms of an Achilles Tendon injury are:

  • Mild aching pain in the heel area that gradually worsens (especially after running)
  • Sharp pain along the tendon while running
  • Tenderness in the heel area first thing in the morning
  • Stiffness in the lower leg
  • Swelling around the tendon area

I’ve suffered an Achilles Tendon injury that wasn’t my fault, how much could I claim?
As with all personal injury compensation claims, amounts vary dramatically on the severity of the injury, and the degree of blame. However, below is a rough guide to what you could expect to claim, based on previous cases and legal guidelines.

  • Severance of the tendon (that severely and permanently restricts movement) – up to £23,000
  • Partial severance of the tendon, where movement is still possible, but it is limited – up to £17,550
  • Moderate injuries where the tendon has significantly healed so that no lasting damage that permanently restricts movement is caused – up to £10,500
  • Minor Achilles Tendon injury which results in damage to the tendon, and a feeling of limited ankle support – up to £5,000
