What is carpal tunnel syndrome?

Carpal tunnel syndrome refers to the pain felt in central hand area, or numbness in the fingers, as a result of nerve pressure from strained or stressed muscle tissue. The syndrome occurs when one area of the hand is over worked, which cause strain and stress to the muscle and surrounding tissue. This in turn causes the muscle to swell and place additional stress on surrounding nerves, which causes the pain which we commonly feel. 

How is it caused?

Carpal tunnel syndrome can be caused by a number of reasons, some of the most common include:

• Writing, painting or anything that involves using a tight grip
• Common sports including tennis which involve using a grip
• Typing, assembly line work or any form of repetitive hand motion
• Driving and sewing.

What symptoms might I get?

Symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome can range from relatively minor injuries to persistent and longer term injuries, depending on the nature of the damage. Some common symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome include:

• Arthritis – if the joints are left untreated the problems can become chronic leading to arthritis
• Pain anywhere in the hands, fingers or elbows which can be either a sharp, piercing pain or a small tingling sensation
• Numbness or loss of feeling in the surrounding area, including hands and fingers
• Loss of grip or strength in one or both hands.

Who can I claim against?
