Compensation for Faulty Breast Augmentation

Plastic surgery is becoming commonplace in society and each year thousands of women go under the knife with the hopes of becoming more like the models that we see on the pages of magazines. Some people do it for work and others just for self-confidence, but whatever the reason it is quickly becoming a growing industry within the UK.

Like any other type of surgery, plastic surgery is dangerous and it comes with all of the risks that you would associate with any other type of elective or non-elective surgery. There are a number of things that can go wrong and although the practice is being refined, there are still many variables that mean you could be left with very serious injuries as a result of your surgery.

Doctors are required to discuss the entire process with their patients and ensure that they have a full understanding of the procedure before it commences, but if you feel that this hasn’t been done, or that your doctor has been negligent towards you before, during or after surgery then you could be eligible to make a compensation claim.

What is Breast Augmentation

Breast augmentation is a procedure whereby fillers are placed into the skin around the breast tissue with the aim of enlarging the area and increasing the cup size of the patient. The fillers sit on top of the natural breast tissue and cause the skin to stretch, hence enlarging the breast. Breast augmentation is a common surgical procedure among models and other workers who depend on their appearance for their jobs.

What can go wrong?

When it comes to breast augmentation there are a number of things that can go wrong and some of the common complaints that we see include:

  • Faulty implants – Faulty implants can leak or tear which can cause infection around the breast tissue and lead to a whole host of potentially serious injuries
  • Negligent surgery – If there is negligence during surgery it could lead to cuts and lacerations of the surrounding tissue and potentially heavy scarring in the breast tissue and surrounding area
  • Allergic reactions – The patient could have an allergic reaction to either the anaesthetic or the breast implants which could lead to serious injuries.

Who could I claim against?

When it comes to making a compensation claim, you will most commonly claim against the person who has been negligent towards you – in this case it will be the operating surgeon. If you feel that they haven’t properly alerted you to the risks, or that they have been negligent during the surgery process then you could be eligible to make a compensation claim.
