The derailment of a Manchester train by an icicle late last year has sparked interest in providing extreme weather training to many network rail staff members.
As part of the training, rail bosses would be shown how to train staff to identify problems and inspect tunnels in extreme weather conditions.

It is hoped that this training would prevent a repeat of last year’s incident, where 40 people were aboard the train in question.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch found that the train was travelling at around 70mph before it hit a 26ft long block of ice when entering the tunnel.
According to the report “During the immediate aftermath of the derailment there as further falls of ice onto the roof of the derailed train, which caused alarm among the passengers.”
Fire crews were on the scene quickly to remove the ice and help the passengers to safety.
According to the report, the ice risk was not properly identified before rail services resumed and this in turn allowed the accident to happen.
Although the track was inspected, the icicles were not deemed a risk to the rail service.
