The vehicle lost control and hit a tree at a roundabout near the Worsley Court House. The accident occurred at the junction of Worsley Rd and Barton Rd, Worsley and happened at around 2.20am.
The family of five – a man and a women and three children – were all in the car at the time of the accident. Aside from woman and youngest child, the three other occupants only received minor injuries. They are currently being treated at Hope Hospital, Salford.
The one-year-old and the mother are currently in a critical condition having suffered multiple injuries. The child is being treated at the Manchester Children’s Hospital.
Spokesman for the Greater Manchester Fire Service, Paul Duggan said the Renault Scenic was the only car involved in the collision.
“The car struck a tree on the roundabout – there was no other vehicle involved apparently,” he said.
“Members of the public had stopped to help when we arrived and had got the family out of the vehicle. Our crews then took over resuscitation until ambulance officers arrived.”
Although in this instance there were no other cars involved, roundabouts can be a substantial cause of car accidents, particularly if road users are not paying correct attention when entering them. Car crashes at roundabouts can be quite severe in nature as they generally involve side on collisions, which generic cars are not built to withstand well – leading to a number of serious injuries.
The road rules specifically dictate what should happen at a roundabout and if you believe that you have been involved in a car accident where a fellow road user has not obeyed these rules, then you could be eligible to make a compensation claim to cover any costs that you have incurred.
