Free corrective surgery could be made available to women with “faulty” breast implants

While the French Government has already agreed to fund the removal of implants for its citizens, the NHS has not been so forthcoming, and the issues is presently being discussed as to who should foot the bill.

According to shadow health minister Andy Burnham, this presents the opportunity for the cosmetic surgery industry to take some responsibility for its actions.

“You get the distinct impression here that we’re dealing with an industry that’s good at the sales pitch and taking the money up front, but less good at the aftercare and facing up to responsibilities when things go wrong,” he said.

With the risk of a rupture believed to be as low as 1%, according to the MHRA, conclusions have been drawn that the silicone may not need to be removed.

But Tim Goodacre from the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons believes that most women would still like to see the implants removed.

“If you believe a device is faulty, I think this would be true in your car or any other object that you buy, you would want to have that replaced on a staged basis,” he said.
