A permanent injury can be more complicated than a temporary one. This may seem trite, but when you look at compensation for an injury which will affect you for the rest of your life, you only get one chance to get your level of compensation assessed, which means you need to get the numbers right at the beginning.

It is often difficult to assess how much compensation you will need to fund medical care, loss of earnings, loss of pension and cost of treatment for the rest of your life, especially as life expectancy is so difficult to calculate.
It is of paramount importance to get medical advice. A doctor (and in particular one who specialises in legal medical reports for compensation claims) will be able to assess if your injury is permanent, and can explain why it is permanent. A medico-legal report will also detail the extent of any injury and is likely to explain what type of care a person will need for the rest of their life. It will also give an opinion of the likely cost of that care.
In order to claim compensation you will also need to prove that the injury was the fault of somebody else, that the person who injured you owed you a duty of care and that their negligence caused you the permanent injury.
You may need to prove that the injury affects your day-to-day activities. This will include stopping you from playing hobbies you once enjoyed, such as playing golf or gardening. To do this you may have to invite a specialist to visit your home to compile a report of activities you are restricted from doing. Our specialist personal injury solicitors will be able to make a detailed report and know exactly what to look for when making a report.
You may have to give up work as a result of a permanent injury, or if you are self-employed you may have to sell your business if you cannot carry on. It may be worth consulting a financial adviser who can assess how much money you have lost as a result of the personal injury and how much you are likely to lose in the future.
You should compile as many details of the injury as you can. For example, if you had an accident you should get eye-witness testimony of the event, and obtain as much evidence as you can.
