The problem with PTSD is that it can be difficult to assess. Furthermore, it can take months or years before the symptoms first appear, long after the event which caused it has happened. Symptoms of PTSD included having flashbacks of the accident, nightmares, panic attacks, short temper and anger, anxiety and phobias.
If you suffer PTSD and the accident which caused it was not your fault then someone else should pay for your pain and any losses incurred. You may incur psychiatrist or counselling fees. You may also have to change your job to one less stressful, or even give up work altogether. Your partner may even need to give up work to care for you.
Depression and anxiety can be crippling, and panic attacks can stop you from even getting out of bed. Remember that these are medical conditions which can be treated (if not cured), but someone needs to pay for the treatment and the emotional and psychological pain they have caused through their negligence.
Because it is a psychological condition, it is difficult to assess PTSD. This is why it is important to get immediate medical advice so your injury can be assessed. Our personal injury experts have in-depth experience of psychological injury and can take all the stress and inconvenience out of claiming the compensation you deserve.
The level of compensation depends on the severity of the psychiatric injury. Mild depression is less debilitating than constant anxiety, which is why it is important to get a psychiatric report to gauge how much compensation is suitable. Mild PTSD is defined as psychiatric injury from which the sufferer is likely to recover within 3 years, and one is likely to be awarded upwards of £4000. Sufferers of PTSD which is likely to be permanent can attract compensation awards of £45,000. These awards were for the psychiatric injury alone and did not include damages awarded for other injury.
Make sure you keep any receipts for expenses incurred from PTSD, including travel costs to the hospital or counsellor, and for any medical fees.
