Institutional discrimination leads to at least 74 deaths

David Congdon, Mencap’s head of campaigns and policy believe that these cases are examples of poor NHS care towards people with a learning disability.

“They confirm that too many parts of the health service still do not understand how to treat people with a learning disability and they are an appalling catalogue of neglect and indignity,” he said.

“As a result of institutional discrimination in the NHS, people with a learning disability are dying when their lives could be saved.”

Some examples of the negligence include situations where patients have been denied basic nursing care, staff have failed to diagnose serious illness and patients have been denied the appropriate medication. 

The NHS’s medical director Professor Sir Bruce Keogh has vowed to look closely at the Mencap dossier to ensure that all members of the community are receiving equal healthcare.

“…I take very seriously any evidence that this is not reflected in our NHS. I look forward to seeing the Mencap report,” he said.
