If you have recently contracted pleural thickening through no fault of your own then you may be eligible to receive a compensation pay out to cover any medical costs that you incurred or any loss of income due to your injury.

What is pleural thickening?

Pleural thickening mainly occurs after a prolonged period of exposure to asbestos. The asbestos fibres are inhaled either through the nose or the mouth and make their way right through to the pleura, where they start to cause scarring and thickening of the surrounding membranes.

As this process continues, the lung tissue starts to harden and loses the suppleness that generally allows the lungs to function properly. This in turn leads to a shortness of breath and the development of further complications.

What causes pleural thickening?

Although asbestos is the main cause there also are a few other contribuents to pleural thickening, these include:
  • Injuries to the lung area including any damage to the surrounding rib cage
  • Tuberculosis or any other relevant infections
  • Blood clots in the lung and surrounding tissues
  • Certain medications which can be used to treat illness in other parts of the body.

What can I claim for?

If you feel that you have contracted pleural thickening through no fault of your own then you may be able to claim for compensation. Some of the areas where you may be able to claim include:
  • Workplace exposure – If you are working in an area where you are exposed to asbestos then you may be able to claim against your employer
  • Incorrect or inadequate warning – If you are not warned of the dangers of entering an area where there may be asbestos present, or remnants of asbestos
  • Incorrect building practice – If you have a property built incorrectly with the wrong products there may be the possibility for asbestos contamination which could potentially harm yourself and your family.

How can I claim?
