As the winter snow gets a grip on the UK for a second day, the amount of injuries caused by slipping on ice and snow has rocketed. Accident and Emergency departments in hospitals throughout Great Britain have initiated emergency protocols to cope with the added influx of snow related injuries. The Met Office has issued more advanced severe weather warnings, ranging from Rain in the South East to more heavy showers across the Pennines and the North of England. Expect 10 to 20 centimetres of fresh snow. As temperatures plummet added care needs to be taken as roads and pavements freeze.
That's right accidents do happen, but the number of accidents caused by sledging and slips in the snow is up! Typical injuries suffered are dislocated shoulders, broken fingers, fractured ribs and fractured writs. Wrist injuries are normally the result of people slipping and falling on untreated paths and walkways. The elderly have to be careful as slipping up can cause a broken hip or head injury.
Expect the thaw to add flooding to our winter weather conditions. So this means that flooding may occur in low lying areas or around vulnerable rivers that are prone to their banks bursting.
Accidents in snow and ice are unfortunate, however you may not be able to claim compensation for a slip or a fall caused by ice, unless it can be proved that someone is negligent.
